Et bien en a pris, \u00e0 lui et \u00e0 son groupe, puisqu\u2019ils ont surv\u00e9cu \u00e0 la cata Neo-Metal, surtout lorsque qu\u2019elle n\u2019a plus \u00e9t\u00e9 n\u00e9o du tout (assez vite en somme toute). La diff\u00e9rence entre Deftones et la quasi-totalit\u00e9 des groupes jadis \u00e9tiquet\u00e9s \u00ab\u00a0Nu Metal\u00a0\u00bb, ceux qui ont vite fait fortune au tournant des ann\u00e9es 2000, c\u2019est que ces premiers ne se sont jamais laiss\u00e9 enfermer dans un bocal \u00f4 combien r\u00e9ducteur (et assez faible, tant musicalement qu\u2019esth\u00e9tiquement), mais dont ils sont pourtant consid\u00e9r\u00e9s comme les initiateurs. Deftones a depuis ses d\u00e9buts d\u00e9livr\u00e9 sa propre et unique version des choses, ce qui diff\u00e9rencie en fait depuis l\u2019aube des temps les artistes des suiveurs (\u00e0 dreadlocks jaunes, baggys et ongles vernis en l\u2019occurrence). \u00ab\u00a0Adrenaline\u00a0\u00bb et ses hurlements Indus refl\u00e9tait ad\u00e9quatement l\u2019ambiance post-grunge de l\u2019ann\u00e9e 1995, tout comme \u00ab\u00a0Around the Fur\u00a0\u00bb, ses deux simples \u00a0et sa pochette inoubliable, 1997. Et que penser du livide \u00ab\u00a0White Pony\u00a0\u00bb, leur sommet \u00e0 ce jour\u00a0? Un des seuls albums potables de l\u2019an 2000 tout bonnement. Il en fut de m\u00eame pour le sombre \u00ab\u00a0Deftones\u00a0\u00bb ainsi que pour l\u2019inqui\u00e9tant \u00ab\u00a0Saturday Night Wrist\u00a0\u00bb de 2003 et 2006. Les reflets ind\u00e9modables d\u2019une \u00e9poque.<\/p>\n<p>Pour dire que ce huiti\u00e8me essai des c\u00e9r\u00e9braux de Sacramento \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s attendu des deux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de l\u2019Atlantique. Savamment teas\u00e9 depuis le mois de janvier, trois extraits ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9j\u00e0 divulgu\u00e9s par la maison de disques, \u00ab\u00a0Gore\u00a0\u00bb \u00e9tait d\u2019ores et d\u00e9j\u00e0 annonc\u00e9 comme un des albums de 2016. La vision deftonienne de notre temps s\u2019av\u00e8re, \u00e0 premi\u00e8re vue, assez l\u00e9g\u00e8re, comme en t\u00e9moigne cette magnifique pochette, ce ciel violac\u00e9 dans lequel s\u2019envole un troupeau de flamands roses. Contrastant avec son titre, mais en bonne ad\u00e9quation avec son Artwork, le contenu musical est contre toute attente a\u00e9rien, fruit de la premi\u00e8re collaboration entre le groupe et le renomm\u00e9 Matt Hyde (qui a assist\u00e9 un grand nombre de divers et vrais artistes US depuis vingt ans\u00a0: Slayer, No Doubt, Monster Magnet, Porno for Pyros, Sum 41, Children of Bodom, etc\u2026). Et la prod\u2019 s\u2019av\u00e8re \u00eatre un des points forts de ce successeur du triste \u00ab Koi No Yokan \u00bb, l\u2019album con\u00e7u pendant l\u2019interminable coma du regrett\u00e9 Chi Cheng. Le disque commence sur un l\u00e9ger crissement, enchain\u00e9 sur un riff cristallin et la plainte \u00e9th\u00e9r\u00e9e de Chino Moreno (\u00ab\u00a0There\u2019s a new strange godless demon awake inside me \/ There\u2019s a force divine terrorizing the angels I keep\u2026\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0: l\u2019astral \u00ab Prayers \/ Triangles \u00bb donne le ton des 48\u00a0: 08 minutes \u00e0 venir.<\/p>\n<p>Tout le long, la voix de Chino Moreno para\u00eet \u00e9tonnamment juv\u00e9nile. Tr\u00e8s souvent m\u00e9lancolique. Tout comme ceux des disques ant\u00e9rieurs, l\u2019alternance entre cris surhumains satur\u00e9s, refrains lancinants et c\u0153urs harmonieux caract\u00e9rise les vocaux de \u00ab Gore \u00bb. Partout, les aigus dominent les graves. M\u00eame sur les morceaux les plus lourds (\u00ab\u00a0Gore\u00a0\u00bb). Les paroles sont toutes sign\u00e9es Moreno, qui assoit son emprise sur la direction artistique. Ses mots renforcent l\u2019impression vaporeuse\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Acid Hologram\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Doomed User\u00a0\u00bb,\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0Geometric Headdress\u00a0\u00bb, \u00ab\u00a0Xenon\u00a0\u00bb, ou encore \u00ab\u00a0Phantom Bride\u00a0\u00bb. Sur ce dernier, le revenant Jerry Cantrell, qui lui, demeure emmur\u00e9 dans la seconde moiti\u00e9 des ann\u00e9es 1990 pour une raison non musicale, nous offre un chorus et des parties de guitare dont il a conserv\u00e9 le secret. Eblouissant morceau. P\u00e9tries de coh\u00e9rence et d\u2019unit\u00e9, les onze pistes ne sont ni longues ni courtes, et toutes en mid-Tempo. Les atmosph\u00e8res sont souvent \u00e0 dominante mid-eighties. En arp\u00e8ges, reverbs et \u00e9chos, elles font contre toute attente plus penser \u00e0 Depeche Mode, \u00e0 Tears for Fears, voire \u00e0 A-Ha, qu\u2019\u00e0 Limp Bizkit, P.O.D. ou Alien Ant Farm. D\u2019ailleurs, on se souviendra que l\u2019eurasien et les siens ch\u00e9rissent la New Wave, ayant repris \u00ab To Have and to Hold \u00bb des quatre de Basildon sur le Tribute \u00ab For the Masses \u00bb en 1998. Les riffs lourds, caract\u00e9ristiques du style de Stephen Carpenter, c\u00e8dent parfois le passage \u00e0 des guitares Indie (\u00ab\u00a0Hearts \/ Wire\u00a0\u00bb, une sorte de qu\u00eate vers le n\u00e9ant). Le seul morceau v\u00e9ritablement Hard Rock est le Maiden Look Alike \u00ab\u00a0Pittura Infamante\u00a0\u00bb (du moins son intro).<\/p>\n<p>Ce saphir prend fin sur l\u2019\u00e9pique \u00ab\u00a0Rubicon\u00a0\u00bb. Qui rassemble \u00e0 lui seul l\u2019ensemble des qualit\u00e9s de \u00ab\u00a0Gore\u00a0\u00bb. Et qui plane \u00e0 mille lieux au-dessus de la Californie. Il s\u2019agit de l\u2019album d\u2019une voix\u2026 et d\u2019une guitare, les autres musiciens restant quelque peu en retrait. Etonnant lorsqu\u2019on a lu que des tensions entre le chanteur et le guitariste auraient \u00e9maill\u00e9 l\u2019enregistrement. Etonnant ou pas, au vu du nombre de joyaux qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7us dans le trouble, la ranc\u0153ur, voire la haine. Celui-ci laisse au final l\u2019impression d\u2019une collision dans le temps. Comme si des ambiances de 1985 avaient rencontr\u00e9 des plans musicaux de 1997 et une production de 2016. \u00ab\u00a0Gore\u00a0\u00bb n\u2019est toutefois pas un disque facile d\u2019acc\u00e8s. Mais, sans radoter, sur jouer ni encore moins revenir en arri\u00e8re, Deftones conjugue \u00e0 sa guise les \u00e9poques, ses \u00e9poques en d\u00e9finitive, et ce faisant nous livre le chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre de ce printemps.
