C\u2019est peut-\u00eatre un d\u00e9tail pour vous, mais pour moi \u00e7a veut dire beaucoup. Tr\u00e8s probablement parce que les m\u00e9lancoliques su\u00e9dois pratiquent depuis pas loin de quarante piges un <em>epic doom<\/em>, <em>id est<\/em> un doom metal plus proche par moult aspects (le son, le chant, les th\u00e8mes, le <em>look<\/em>) de groupes de heavy post\u00e9rieurs \u00e0 l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e 1978 que de doom \u00ab canal historique \u00bb <em>post<\/em>-woodstock. Ledit \u00ab doom \u00bb \u00e9tant ma ch\u00e8re Madame Michu cette fi\u00e9vreuse chapelle visc\u00e9ralement obs\u00e9d\u00e9e par les quatre premiers Black Sabbath, une hallucinante fixation tant sur le fond que sur la forme, maladivement r\u00e9tive \u00e0 l\u2019ensemble des tournants modernistes op\u00e9r\u00e9s par la musique metal (notamment \u00e0 l\u2019or\u00e9e des ann\u00e9es 1980), refusant brejenevement de r\u00e9aliser qu\u2019Ozzy Osbourne s\u2019est r\u00e9ellement fait cong\u00e9dier par les trois autres membres du Sabbath noir en janvier 1979 ; une horde de chevelus mentalement et fonctionnellement bloqu\u00e9e entre le premier coup de tocsin du premier morceau de \u00ab Black Sabbath \u00bb (soit le 13 f\u00e9vrier 1970) et l\u2019ultime coup de grosse caisse de Bill Ward sur \u00ab Under the Sun \/ Every Day Comes and Goes \u00bb en m\u00eame temps qu&rsquo;un mi l\u00e2ch\u00e9 par Tommy Iommi et Geezer Butler (le 25 septembre 1972). Enfouie pour l&rsquo;\u00e9ternit\u00e9 sous Chaban ! A la diff\u00e9rence notable que nos cinq lurons de Candlemass sont depuis leurs d\u00e9buts un tantinet plus ouverts d\u2019esprit que leurs homologues US, et ont volontiers incorpor\u00e9 \u00e0 leur maniaquerie certaines touches des albums suivants de Black Sabbath, principalement de \u00ab Sabbath Bloody Sabbath \u00bb (1<sup>er<\/sup> d\u00e9cembre 1973) au son plus ac\u00e9r\u00e9 et poli, moins mollasson et cradingue que ceux de ses quatre devanciers. Se rapprochant en cela de leurs compatriotes de Count Raven. Leif Edling, le bassiste et cerveau de la chandelle, va m\u00eame jusqu\u2019\u00e0 affirmer dans Metal Hammer que \u00ab Back Street Kids \u00bb de 1976, et surtout \u00ab Never Say Die \u00bb de 1978, sont deux des riffs metal les plus lourds de tous les temps (sacril\u00e8ge aux yeux des puristes !!!). Les th\u00e8mes abord\u00e9s par Candlemass d\u00e9vient \u00e9galement quelque peu de l\u2019orthodoxie doom afin de lorgner du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l\u2019h\u00e9ro\u00efque fantaisie. Un peu comme chez les honnis Iron Maiden. Le tout afin de cr\u00e9er une \u0153uvre finalement proche de l\u2019intemporel. Ce qui s\u2019av\u00e8re commode en 2022. Et force est de constater que l\u2019option doom adopt\u00e9e par le <em>quintet<\/em> de quinquag\u00e9naires scandinaves demeure pertinente (particuli\u00e8rement en novembre), et a fi\u00e8re allure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Treizi\u00e8me album studio depuis le classique \u00ab Epicus Doomicus Metallicus \u00bb de 1986, grav\u00e9 apr\u00e8s dix-huit mois de travail acharn\u00e9 au NOX studio de Stockholm, \u00ab Sweet Evil Sun \u00bb s\u2019inscrit dans la stricte observance du style candlemassien. De par les intitul\u00e9s de ses dix morceaux d\u00e9j\u00e0 (\u00ab Angel Battle \u00bb, \u00ab Devil Voodoo \u00bb, \u00ab Scandinavian Gods \u00bb, \u00ab Crucified \u00bb ou encore \u00ab Goddess \u00bb\u2026) ; une des caract\u00e9ristiques du doom \u00e9tant ce champ lexical concentr\u00e9 sur l\u2019essentiel sabbathien, inversement proportionnel \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9tendue des complaintes. De par les th\u00e9matiques abord\u00e9es \u00e9galement. Rien de post-moderne. Cela cause de sorcier du tourbillon, de braises mal\u00e9fiques, de cieux en spirale, de gravitation noire, d\u2019amis des t\u00e9n\u00e8bres, de portail des enfers, de sphinx dans la lueur argent\u00e9e, de centaines de c\u00e9ramiques sur le champ de bataille, de caravanes de d\u00e9pouilles, ou encore de l\u2019enfant de l\u2019\u00e9toile noire\u2026 Rien qui ne puisse non plus perturber le fanatique de la premi\u00e8re heure pour ce qui ressort de l\u2019<em>artwork<\/em> (sign\u00e9 Erik Rovanper\u00e4). Embl\u00e9matique de Candlemass : la partie sup\u00e9rieure d\u2019un crane pos\u00e9e sur un astre flamboyant, perc\u00e9e par deux poignards au niveau des tempes et orn\u00e9e d\u2019un crucifix, le tout de coloration argent\u00e9e sur fond sombre et de nuages violac\u00e9s en col\u00e8re. <em>Idem<\/em> quant aux structures des compositions : du Black Sab\u2019 froid et alambiqu\u00e9 mirant vers les d\u00e9buts de l&rsquo;\u00e8re Dio. Une musique pachydermique, dans la veine de leur pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent \u00ab The Door to Doom \u00bb paru il y a trois ans, mais dot\u00e9e d\u2019une production davantage vive et tranchante. A l\u2019image du cadenc\u00e9 \u00ab Wizard of Vortex \u00bb qui ouvre ce bal tragique ; au riff voisin de ceux des raimbowesques \u00ab Sweet Evil Sun \u00bb et \u00ab Black Butterfly \u00bb. L\u2019adjectif \u00ab \u00e9pique \u00bb est plus que jamais justifi\u00e9 par le chant incantatoire et articul\u00e9 de Johan L\u00e4ngqvist, l&rsquo;ant\u00e9diluvien vocaliste revenu au bercail en 2019 (apr\u00e8s trente-trois ann\u00e9es d\u2019errance !). Lequel entrelace ses lamentations \u00e0 celles de la p\u00e9tulante <em>skjaldm\u00f6<\/em> Jennie-Ann Smith (d\u2019Avatarium, une formation de metal su\u00e9dois vari\u00e9\u2026 fond\u00e9e par le bassiste Leif Edling en 2013, laquelle vient d\u2019ailleurs de publier le raffin\u00e9 \u00ab Death, Where is your Sting \u00bb qu\u2019il n\u2019est gu\u00e8re interdit d\u2019\u00e9couter en compl\u00e9ment) sur le refrain du metal gothique \u00ab When Death Sighs \u00bb (\u00ab Quand la mort soupire \u00bb). Magnifique. Cette redoutable prod\u2019 s&rsquo;av\u00e8re \u00eatre le point crucial d&rsquo;un bel effort discographique. Lequel ravira doomeuses et doomeux mais \u00e9galement badauds. Du travail d\u2019orf\u00e8vre pour opiner lentement de la bo\u00eete cr\u00e2nienne. Et pour durer.
