Pl\u00e9thore de bonnes choses en d\u00e9finitive\u2026 L\u2019an pass\u00e9, Tool et Slipknot furent les contributions discographiques les plus attendues, et \u00e0 juste titre. En cette morne ann\u00e9e, c\u2019est au tour de Lamb of God d\u2019\u00eatre esp\u00e9r\u00e9 tel Grouchy \u00e0 Waterloo. Les cinq virginiens arrivent \u00e0 temps ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 pic, ce troisi\u00e8me vendredi de juin afin de nous d\u00e9livrer leur huiti\u00e8me album studio. Les incartades solitaires \u00e9tant bien souvent signes de revirement, <em>a minima<\/em> d\u2019enrichissement, des collectifs, le remarquable et pluridisciplinaire \u00ab Anesthetic \u00bb du guitariste Mark Morton paru il y a quelques mois, aurait pu laisser augurer d&rsquo;\u00e9ventuels changements de direction artistique ; \u00e0 l\u2019instar de l\u2019EP caritatif \u00ab The Duke \u00bb de 2016, au sein duquel le groupe (notamment son guttural chanteur) avait \u00e9clairci le ton ainsi que le son. <em>Que nenni<\/em>, nulle r\u00e9volution de palais : \u00ab Lamb of God \u00bb nous r\u00e9gale avec la quintessence de Lamb of God. D\u2019o\u00f9 probablement l\u2019\u00e9ponymique intitul\u00e9. Une pochette aust\u00e8re et blafarde dans la continuit\u00e9 de ses devanci\u00e8res (des montres \u00e0 gousset cass\u00e9es, faisant penser \u00e0 celles de l\u2019onirique li\u00e8vre de mars et de Phileas Fogg) confirme la tendance. No clean vocals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Initialement et principalement inspir\u00e9 par Pantera, Lamb of God pratique depuis vingt-cinq ans du \u00ab groove metal \u00bb. Ledit terme \u00e9tant probablement un des plus mal choisis de l\u2019histoire de la musique, nous ne nous attendrons pas \u00e0 apercevoir Bootsy Collins ou Maceo Parker dans le paysage (m\u00eame de loin cach\u00e9s derri\u00e8re un arbre) et s\u00fbrement pas ici et maintenant. D\u2019ailleurs, et par un singulier jeu de chaises musicales s\u00e9mantique, l\u2019on qualifiait dans les ann\u00e9es 1990 ce genre de \u00ab power metal \u00bb\u2026 \u00ab Puissant \u00bb, \u00ab baston \u00bb, \u00ab bal\u00e8ze \u00bb, voire m\u00eame \u00ab bourrin \u00bb, seraient effectivement plus appropri\u00e9s que \u00ab groovy \u00bb\u2026 A ce propos, le jeu d\u2019Art Cruz, le nouveau batteur, est ici \u00e9poustouflant : de la centi\u00e8me seconde de \u00ab Memento Mori \u00bb, l\u2019abyssal premier titre, \u00e0 la deux cent troisi\u00e8me de \u00ab On the Hook \u00bb (morceau qui s\u2019ach\u00e8ve brusquement, en m\u00eame-temps que le disque, comme si le pr\u00e9pos\u00e9 aux consoles avait involontairement march\u00e9 sur un c\u00e2ble\u2026), le n\u00e9ophyte rempla\u00e7ant de Chris Adler (parti se mustainer) ne va jamais rel\u00e2cher une pression virulente, syncop\u00e9e, haletante, tentaculaire\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">La production en constitue le deuxi\u00e8me point fort. Encore plus \u00e9paisse que celles des classiques \u00ab Ashes of the Wake \u00bb et \u00ab Sacrament \u00bb de 2004 et 2006. Manufactur\u00e9e par leur partenaire historique Josh Wilbur, elle marie \u00e0 la perfection graves et aigus, rondeur et pr\u00e9cision, nappes sur nappes, ainsi que ce luxe d\u2019entendre distinctement entre deux cessez-le-feu un claquement de baguettes, de fluides plans de basse, ou les cordes de la Jackson Mark Morton Pro Dominion. Son troisi\u00e8me atout se niche au sein de la complexit\u00e9 des structures, des alternances et des contrastes, de l\u2019inspiration. Le planant refrain de \u00ab Resurrection Man \u00bb \u00e9voque de mani\u00e8re subliminale celui de \u00ab Dirt \u00bb d\u2019Alice in Chains, autre mod\u00e8le des quadras. La contribution de Chuck Billy sur le saccad\u00e9 \u00ab Routes \u00bb rappelle que le thrash US est un de leurs territoires d\u2019origine. Sinon, nul morceau de bravoure ou simple \u00e9vident : tous sont parfaits, et rien ne d\u00e9pare ou ne d\u00e9bande. Des critiques ont fortuitement (?) employ\u00e9 le m\u00eame terme de \u00ab Panth\u00e9on \u00bb, afin de d\u00e9signer l\u2019effet de \u00ab Lamb of God \u00bb sur la carri\u00e8re de Lamb of God\u2026 Certainement.
